Poppies and sunflowers

Description

This is experimental watercolour painting with loads of texture.

I'm quite out of my comfort zone but I'm enjoying the process!
I think I will try this technique again on bigger canvas when I manage to buy more structure paste even though I would have preferred a bit less sticky and stiff one. I bought the paste from sale and didn't use it right away so I thing the best before date was expired a while ago... Then again this is quite a learning curve without any tutorials or anything, but it's also exciting.

After putting on the structure paste on the canvas, I used wet on wet to create hazy background and I also started to define where the flowers go with colours. Because the paste was quite sticky I decided to go with really bold texture and the flowers  and flying petals got another treatment with structure paste. After that I gave the flowers another wet on wet wash and then added another few layers so that the poppies would pop out.

I'm quite happy how this painting turned out and doesn't look like traditional watercolour at all. It's different and there will be place for it on my wall.

"Schminke Modeling Paste, Coarse:Featuring a fantastic gritty feel, this medium offers good, even application. It creates an extremely grainy textured surface, perfect for representing rough ground, coarse sand, or pebbles on the beach. Watercolor sinks into the paste with a restricted flow, creating perfect results for certain types of subject matter. Apply with a palette knife or spatula and let dry before painting over."
